Too Ashamed Or Too Scared To Speak Up, Tens Of Thousands Of 50-Plus Victims Of Family Violence Suffer In Silence
The headline of an article in the January / February 2006 issue of AARP magazine illustrates the impact of domestic violence on the ever increasing “60 plus” population. Elder abuse, one type of family violence, is an all-inclusive term characterizing all types of mistreatment or abusive behavior toward older adults, including physical, sexual, psychological/emotional, or financial abuse.
- 90% of abusers of the elderly are family members
- Elder abuse is sometimes family violence growing old, for example
- The victim has been living in an abusive situation for years
- Elder abuse is sometimes late-onset family violence, for example:
- Abuse perpetrated just because the elderly family member has
become more dependent, frail and vulnerable
- Abuse because the family member is retaliating for the years
of abuse suffered at the hands of the now elderly abuser)
